Series XBP - Maps and plans of land belonging to Bethlem at Charing Cross

Date Range1780? - 1829?

ProvenanceBethlem Royal Hospital
Description

Bethlem had possessed property in the vicinity of Charing Cross since at least 1403. (It has been suggested that insane patients were first transferred to the hospital in Bishopsgate from this property, the Stone House, towards the end of the fourteenth century.) In 1830, Bethlem was forced to give up these holdings, along with adjoining landholders, and buildings on it were subsequently demolished, so that Trafalgar Square could be laid out, and received land and buildings in Piccadilly in exchange.
