Description	The Special Assessment and Supervision Service was set up by the South East Thames Regional Health Authority (with which the Bethlem and Maudsley worked in close co-operation) to provide psychiatric services for patients too disordered for care on open wards, but not so disturbed as to warrant detention in maximum security hospitals. At its heart was a central clinic (later named the Denis Hill Unit), which provided residential accommodation for thirty patients, sited in the grounds of Bethlem Royal Hospital.
