Description

'Wounded Soldiers' Day' was a social event held in the grounds of Bethlem Royal Hospital on 28 July 1916 at which some 300 wounded soldiers resident in London hospitals attended, along with hospital staff and various dignataries. A 35mm silent black and white film of the event, complete with titles written by Rev E.G. O'Donoghue, Bethlem chaplain and chronicler, was made for the hospital by a Mr Pearce of the Essenay Company, an American film company which opened a London office, headed by Harry A. Spoor, in 1909.

This original nitrate copy of the film is deposited at the National Film and Television Association, British Film Institute, for safekeeping. It has been copied onto videotape (see WSD-02). The film features, among others, Lt.
